9. American Mary

The Soska sisters' toe-curling drama explores something rarely touched upon in horror - extreme body modification.

In American Mary, a medical student called Mary Mason is forced to perform unlicensed surgeries to pay the bills. When she's taken advantage of by her professor, Mary turns him into a guinea pig, testing surgical procedures on him to improve her skills. When the sexual deviant is reported missing, it isn't long before Mary's new life starts to unravel.

American Mary fittingly dissects the topic with care, so it's fascinating without coming across as exploitative. It avoids feeling like tasteless schlock by putting the emphasis on the titular character's plight rather than the blood and guts. You get fully invested in Mary's quandary, which makes the maiming and torture more shocking when it's rammed down your throat.

Even though veterans of the genre should be desensitised to this sort of content, American Mary is sure to make anybody feel squeamish, especially while depicting scenes of a quadriplegic amputee, a sewn up vuvla, or an infected genitalia. (Those moments really should come with a warning.)
