10 More Horror Movies You Constantly Have To Defend Loving
2. The Thing (2011)
Alright, it is time to delve into the murky waters of classic horror remakes. Bring a paddle because it's going to be a bumpy ride.
The Thing (2011) is a prequel to 1982's The Thing (which many forget is a remake itself), and follows a collection of scientists encountering a parasitic alien in an Antarctic research station.
This remake infamously replaced the iconic practical effects from the original with CGI imagery. Of course, expecting people to throw roses at your feet for forgoing the most beloved part of John Carpenter's classic was a fool's errand. That said, while 2011's The Thing doesn't live up to Carpenter's classic, is it really that bad?
It is not a perfect movie, but there's a lot to love in it and there are many who do. The body horror on display is still incredibly creative and frightening, even without the signature practical effects. Plus, it has a (pun intended) chilling atmosphere and sense of tension.
This film was doomed by association from the start, but if you can look past that, you'll find it's an enjoyable scary flick.
