6. Ichi The Killer

This Takashi Miike manga adaptation centres around sadistic yakuza leader Kakihara who stumbles upon a repressed assassin called Ichi. Despite his timid demeanour, Ichi has been trained to slaughter everything in sight when threatened. Though Kakihara hopes to use Ichi for his own agenda, capturing him is anything but easy.

In a nutshell, Ichi the Killer feels more like an endurance test than a movie due to its unrealistic level of depravity. Even though it's made immediately clear the film is going to be a bloodbath, nobody is ready for how ludicrous the violence is. Anyone foolish enough to threaten Ichi is decapitated, mutilated, or vivisected in an instant - the titular antihero making such a mess of his enemies that there's almost nothing left to bury.

Still, Kakihara is somehow worse, as the twisted mob boss takes such glee while he chomps on hands and slices off nipples, his scenes are even harder to watch.

Though Ichi the Killer is gloriously obscene, it's far from inartistic. The bloody thriller is well shot, sharply edited, and boasts a ton of unique fight choreography and unforgettable kills. Nevertheless, only a select few can watch this outrageous horror from start to finish.
