10 More Incredible Horror Movies You’ll Never Watch Again (And Why)
5. Beau Is Afraid
Hereditary and Midsummer prove Ari Aster has a knack for making movies that aren't easy to watch. And his most recent feature, Beau Is Afraid, is no exception.
In this surreal tragicomedy horror, anxiety-riddled Beau is shocked to learn his mother's head has been crushed by a chandelier. Though Beau does all he can to make his mother's funeral, everything seems to be against him.
While Beau Is Afraid is classified as horror, it's not scary in the conventional sense. The reason why it's difficult to sit through is because it's unbearably nerve-wracking, as Beau is assaulted by unjustified hostility everywhere he goes, either verbally, psychologically, or physically. For example, within the first few minutes, he's brutally stabbed by a naked man on the street, despite doing nothing to provoke him.
Any brief moment of peace Beau experiences is quickly followed by something preposterously chaotic, like a gun-toting maniac or a giant monster genitalia. In a way, it's more stressful when Beau seems happy since it's only a matter of time before that feeling is taken away from him in the nastiest way imaginable.
After seeing poor Beau suffering for almost three hours straight, there's little impetus to watch Beau Is Afraid again.
