The Plot Hole:

How did The Narrator (Edward Norton) convince people to join his fight club considering that, from their perspective, they simply saw a guy beating himself up, given that Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) is merely a split personality in the narrator's mind?

The Solution:

Fans have litigated this one to death over the last 25 years, and though Fight Club's twist does cause us to reconsider much of what we've seen throughout the movie, this "plot hole" isn't beyond explanation.

Basically, the sheer fascination factor of a guy kicking his own ass caused people to stop and gawk, but it was the Narrator's/Tyler's magnetic charisma which actually kept them there.

Once he opened his mouth and they heard what he had to say, these men desperate to break out of their staid lives were lured in hook, line, and sinker. His violent, seemingly insane act got their attention, but his philosophy is what got them truly on side.

That isn't to say this isn't one of the flimsier aspects of the film logically speaking, but with some reading between the lines it's easy enough to explain away.
