What We Knew

In the summer of 2016, Fox committed to making a big-budget adaptation of David Petersen’s beloved comic book series Mouse Guard, with Matt Reeves set to produce while scripting duties would be handled by Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), and Wes Ball (The Maze Runner franchise) would direct.

The cast was set to include Idris Elba, Andy Serkis, Jack Whitehall and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, with production planned for a May 2019 start.

Why It Was Cancelled & The Future

Just two weeks before shooting was schedule to begin, Mouse Guard was unceremoniously cancelled by Disney, as one of the first outright casualties of their merger with Fox.

According to reports, Disney balked at the film's hefty $170 million budget - understandable given the property's niche penetration, honestly - and also its similarity to Disney's own CGI-heavy live-action projects.

Mercifully, the producers have been allowed to pitch the project to other studios, but given the high-risk budget and bad stink surrounding its cancellation, it seems likely Mouse Guard won't ever see the light of day (at least not in this capacity).
