10 More Movies Where The Reshoots Were Painfully Obvious
3. The Descent
The Descent lured UK cinemagoers into a false sense of security right at the end. Just when they thought protagonist Sarah had escaped the dark depths and the creatures that dwell there, the whole thing was revealed to be a dream. In reality she was completely f**ked.
This gut-punch of a conclusion was deemed to dark for US audiences, so an alternate ending where Sarah survives and sees a ghostly vision of her dead friend was filmed for stateside release.
Not only is the darker ending more in keeping with the tone of the film, it became painfully clear to UK fans that another ending was shot when The Descent Part 2 came along and treated the US conclusion as canonical.
There's a jarring inconsistency here, since those who saw The Descent on the big screen in Britain saw Sarah apparently die (there's no way she could have survived), only to see her alive in the opening scene of the sequel.
