10 More Unexpected Transformations In Zombie Movies

2. The Newborn - Dawn Of The Dead (2004)

Even though remaking Dawn of the Dead would be a daunting task for anyone, first-time director Zack Snyder knocked it out of the park. The Watchmen filmmaker recaptured the spirit of the original, while still making his version stand on its own merit.

The remake also deals with a unique dilemma rarely seen in the genre: a pregnant zombie.

After the heavily pregnant Luda is bitten, she turns into a demented savage moments before giving birth. Because this is uncharted waters, nobody knows whether the zombie virus has passed onto her foetus.

The scene of the birth goes on for a gruelling six minutes, with everyone praying for the child's safety. Since it's made clear the newborn will be killed at the first sign of infection, audiences are on the edge of their seat.

Only when the babe opens its discoloured eyes and lets out an inhuman shriek does it become clear what fate has in store for it. As the ensemble look at each other, they know what must be done.

The child's execution isn't shown, but it's still heartbreaking to hear that single gunshot ring throughout the building.
