10 Most Annoying Animated Movie Characters

2. Sam - Lord Of The Rings

Minions The Rise of Gru Otto
United Artists

This film from 1978 is one that many aren't aware exists. This is Ralph Bakshi's version of the Lord of the Rings and it has plenty of merit to it. A lot of its most significant issues are only recognisable in hindsight after seeing the series soar with its live-action trilogy, but one thing that Bakshi particularly messed up on was the portrayal of Samwise Gamgee.

In the books, Sam is an incredibly supporting role who eventually ends up arguably stealing the spot of the protagonist. In the Jackson movies, he is a fiercely loyal friend played to absolute perfection by Sean Astin. In this film, he is a complete bumbling buffoon who causes even more problems than Frodo in the trilogy.

The voice is played by Michael Scholes and is unbelievably irritating. His pitch goes up and down consistently, and all of his delivery makes him sound utterly foolish. Additionally, he is animated to look very silly. Whenever he moves he jumps around the screen with the energy of the Genie from Aladdin, but minus the humour.

It seems that this character was overhauled to generate a comic relief side who contrasts the incredibly dark nature of the tale - like Merry and Pippin do in the Jackson films - but it undoubtedly fails here.
