10 Most Annoying Animated Movie Characters
3. The Gargoyles - The Hunchback Of Notre Dame
The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo is a dark and depressing tale of religious zealots, discrimination, crime and revolution. So when Disney announced that they would be creating a children's version of the story, it was received with trepidation. However, the film delivers on a compelling narrative without being too patronising towards its audience. That is, of course, except for the gargoyles.
These characters, named Victor, Hugo and Laverne (we see what you did there) all exist purely to key in that classic Disney humour. But it entirely falls flat in every attempt that they make. The jokes are way too obvious, have poor execution and no real personality.
The three statues exist as stereotypes: one is overweight, another is old, and the last is posh. They never change outside of this one joke, and it gets so overused. The less said about their solo song, the better.
Ultimately they could have had a profound place in the film had it been revealed that they were figments of Quasi's imagination. But that is discredited when they interact with other characters in the finale.
This is an almost perfect movie, and had it not been for these pointless additions then it would have been a lot closer.
