While fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's source novel probably went into The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King most excited about seeing The Ride of the Rohirrim finally realised in live-action, for non-readers simply enamoured by Peter Jackson's films, it was surely the inevitability of the One Ring being cast into Mount Doom.

Tolkien fans and neophytes alike knew that the moment was coming, that it was to be the culmination of Frodo's (Elijah Wood) unforgettable journey across the trilogy, and a genuine cinematic FOMO moment years before that acronym was popularised.

It goes without saying that Jackson absolutely knocked this moment out of the park, as he did the entire movie, even if non-readers probably didn't bank on Gollum (Andy Serkis) being the one to technically destroy the Ring - albeit only by accident.

In fact, it's such an astonishingly epic moment that Jackson needed to cue up a half-hour's worth of endings afterwards just to give us all time to calm down.
