It's taken him five whole years to follow up the Oscar-winning and nigh-uncategorisable Parasite, but Korean auteur extraordinaire Bong Joon-ho returns this year with Mickey 17, and he's diving back into the world of science fiction - something he has extensive experience in from his work on the likes of Snowpiercer and Okja.

Adapting Edward Ashton's 2022 novel Mickey7, the process from the idea's genesis through to fully realised film has been tremendously rapid (at least as far as the studio system is concerned). And with an all-star cast of sci-fi mainstays at his back, including Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo, and an extended cast that includes such stone-cold talent as Toni Collette, Bong can't really go wrong.

The plot follows the story of Mickey (Pattinson), a disposable employee on an expedition to colonise the distant ice planet Niflheim. Each time his body perishes, a new iteration is generated with most of his memories intact. This poses a whole host of philosophical questions that, given the director's history, are sure to be unpacked via a riveting story.
