Almodóvar has a track record of using food in his movies (think gazpacho in Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown). However, it’s in Spanish drama Volver where he orchestrates his best food scene. Penelope Cruz’s character Raimunda may not be on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but she’s certainly under a lot of stress.
As well as her restauranteur neighbour skipping town and leaving her to cook for a 30-strong film crew, there’s the small matter that her recently murdered husband is still in the kitchen… and yes, she did it.
Nothing affects Raimunda’s culinary prowess though. Her nerves of steel see her throw together a three-course meal of delicious local specialities from Spain’s La Mancha region.
