While mazes are generally light-hearted
attractions designed for some harmless fun, they're understandably associated
with fears and anxieties of becoming hopelessly lost and trapped within their
twisting pathways and dead ends.
In the world of cinema, these maze-based nightmares can be found in the likes of The Shining, The Maze Runner, and the gleefully off-beat Dave Made A Maze. However, the movie maze we’d least like to find ourselves lost within is the shifting labyrinth in Cube.
A sci-fi horror favourite from filmmaker Vincenzo Natali in his feature debut, Cube sees a group of strangers find themselves trapped in a maze comprised of cube-shaped rooms. With no knowledge of how they got there or why they’ve been placed here, the group must find their way to the exit – assuming there is one to begin with.
Their task is made exponentially more difficult by some of the rooms contain deadly traps.
But the traps aren’t what makes this maze terrifying. As paranoia and desperation set in, the group dynamic begins to erode as mistrust and self-preservation takes over.
If the traps don’t get you, the psychological impact of being stuck in this seemingly unwinnable maze will.
