4. Summoning The Empty Man - The Empty Man (2020)

On the first night you hear him, and on the second night you see him. But on the third night, he finds you.

Much in the same like repeating “Candyman” or “Bloody Mary” into a mirror, summoning the Empty Man is a chilling supernatural game of chicken with deadly consequences. This spooky game finds itself at the heart of writer-director David Prior’s mind-bending and criminally underappreciated recent horror outing The Empty Man, which is a very loose adaptation of the comic series of the same name.

To summon this urban legend for yourself, all that’s required is to stand on a bridge and blow into a bottle while thinking about the shadowy figure.

When a family friend (Sasha Frolova) mysteriously vanishes after playing the game with friends, former detective James Lasombra (James Badge Dale) tasks himself with finding her. However, after playing the game himself, the detective discovers that the Empty Man is more than just another ghost story.

Diving down a twisting rabbit hole, his investigation leads him to uncovering a creepy cult, disturbing video tapes, and a bizarre skeleton. All of which comprises an insidious mystery that inexorably seeps under your skin in this slow-burn chiller.
