In David Fincher’s nerve-biting psychological thriller The Game, investment banker Nicholas (Michael Douglas) is gifted a coupon by his brother (Sean Penn) on his 48th birthday that enables him to participate in an unspecified game ran by a mysterious company.

Despite being told that he didn't qualify to participate in this still unknown game, Nicholas returns home to find a sinister clown doll with a key in its mouth. A newscaster on his television then tells him the game has begun. Nicholas's objective, he's told, is to find more of these keys, though he won’t know what their purpose is for.

From here it becomes impossible to tell what’s part of this elaborate game and what isn’t. Not knowing who to trust or what's real, Nicholas finds himself in increasingly dire circumstances as he begins to suspect this game is a ploy to destroy his life. He then takes it upon himself to uncover the truth by any means necessary.

Although Fincher’s film isn’t a full-blown horror like the other inclusions on this list, the frequent twists and turns that The Game takes will nevertheless have viewers constantly in suspense. Likewise, the clown doll is simply terrifying.
