10 Most Chilling Games In Horror Movies
5. Battle Royale - Battle Royale (2000)
Before there was Fortnite, The Hunger Games, or Warzone, the only battle royale that was worth our attention was prolific director Kinji Fukasu’s cult gem Battle Royale.
Based on the novel of the same name by Koushun Takami, the film takes place in a dystopian future in which Japan’s government has set out strict measures to combat juvenile misbehaviour. Every year one class of students is chosen at random to participate in the titular event in which they must fight each other to the death in a three-day struggle for survival.
Trapped on an uninhabited island with explosive collars around their necks, escape isn’t an option. All that the students have to aid them is a handful of provisions, a weapon given at random, and their own wits.
Though this entry is all but universally acclaimed today, its violence made it the subject of plenty of controversy upon its release. So much so that it took a decade for the Japanese distributor to sell the film to US distributors for fear of backlash.
While the battle royale formula has increased in popularity over the years, none have managed to capture the tension and humanity of this premise better than Battle Royale.
