10 Most Cringeworthy Performances From Otherwise Great Actors
4. Kristen Stewart - The Twilight Saga
After breaking through as a child actor in David Fincher's Panic Room, Kristen Stewart has gone from strength to strength. Recent years have seen her successfully morph into one of the most critically acclaimed and unpredictable actresses of her generation, with a series of provocative roles in highly-praised independent films.
It's quite a shame, then, that for most audiences her name remains synonymous with what was creatively the lowest point of her career: the Twilight movies.
The massively popular pentalogy based on Stephenie Meyer's best-selling novels catapulted Stewart and co-star Robert Pattinson to global superstardom. However, as both actors have long since made clear, neither of them were enamoured with the material, or entirely happy with the way it threatened to pigeon-hole them in years ahead (hence Pattinson too has made a point of veering off in a drastically different direction).
Stewart has endured a great deal of ridicule for her turn as the doe-eyed Bella, torn between the love of a dreamy, sparkly vampire and an also-dreamy, perpetually bare-chested werewolf. And with good reason; her facial expressions and line delivery are so flat, she barely seems awake.
But as Stewart's more recent work has demonstrated, it's not that she's a bad actress; she just hated the material. Even so, that doesn't excuse the laziness of her work here.
