10 Most Disappointing Horror Movies Of The Decade (So Far)

4. The Veil

The Veil
Universal Pictures

With a cast that includes Jessica Alba and Thomas Jane, The Veil promises to be a fun romp at the very least. Better yet, the director is Phil Joanou, who made the critically acclaimed U2: Rattle And Hum (1988), a documentary about the Irish band on their US tour, as well as the thrillers State Of Grace (1990) and Heaven’s Prisoners (1995).

Disappointingly, his return to filmmaking is a whimper rather than a bang. The film is so turgid, in fact, that Blumhouse let it slip out unnoticed on DVD.

Jane plays cult leader “Jim Jacobs” (now who do you suppose he’s based on?) whose followers all drink the Kool Aid, but it’s difficult to take this guy seriously when the person he reminds you of most is The Doors/ True Romance-era Val Kilmer. Eccentric rather than frightening, he’s one of several missteps the film makes.

Years later, the sole survivor returns to the site with a camera crew, who discover videotapes dating back to 1985. So it’s another horror movie about watching people watch tapes, and about as interesting as it sounds.
