10 Most Disturbing Movie Endings Of All Time
1. Requiem For A Dream (2000)
Darren Aronofsky is the only director to have two films on this list. That is not because he has a fetish for disturbing audiences (that we know of). It is because he is usually trying to say something with his movies, and he doesn’t just want us to see what he is saying, he wants us to feel what he is saying.
Here the finale is simultaneously one of the most powerful and depressing endings of all time, as all of his main characters succumb to the destruction of their addictions. There is little room for hope in his unrelenting, 'addiction is bad and we will all become addicted to something' message, but it does its job of making you feel the way Aronofsky wants you to feel.
Requiem For A Dream is even more affecting due to the fantastic and sympathetic characters he creates. Stealing the show is Ellen Burstyn who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance of a woman alone and addicted to weight loss pills. Her transformative turn from everyday Gran to schizophrenic, delusional addict is beyond heartbreaking.
