10 Most Disturbing Movie Endings Of All Time
8. Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
Night of the Living Dead is more disturbing for its depiction of racial tensions in America than for it grisly zombie violence. When black hero Ben is gunned down by a white sheriff for no reason, despite surviving the horrors of the night, you're left reeling from a moment that has nothing to do with the titular living dead.
Even though it’s hinted that the police thought Ben was a zombie, it’s impossible not to see parallels with what was going on in society at the time. Sadly, the film’s ending is just as relevant today as it was when released.
Although George A. Romero has said that he had not intentionally tried to tackle race relations in the US, it’s hard not to read into the crushing finale as an allegory. Jordan Peele has even cited Night of the Living Dead as one of the biggest influences on his 2017 Oscar winning racially aware horror Get Out, proving its lasting impact on the genre.
