5. Mother! (2017)
The whole final thirty or so minutes of Darren Aronofsky’s Mother is pretty out there as things become increasingly chaotic, and the reality of the relatively mainstream narrative dives into arthouse territory. In doing so, Aronofsky tests the thickness of the audience’s skin as he pummels us with disturbing images and actions. However, there is one moment, in particular, that would make even the most hardened cinemagoer wince.
In one excruciating scene Jennifer Lawrence’s character 'Mother' has her newborn baby taken away from her and passed around the many new inhabitants of the house, only for the baby’s neck to break. The sound effect alone makes you go cold.
Even after reading Aronofsky’s explanation for the film as being a metaphor for the earth, and how we are destroying it, with the house being symbolic of our planet and Laurence being Mother Nature trying to hold it together, the scene still revolts and repels the viewer. But then again that is pretty much his intention. Not an easy watch.
