10 Most Disturbing Plot Twists In Non-Horror Movies

6. The Wrong Coffin - Buried (2010)

Edward Norton Primal Fear
Lionsgate

Rodrigo Cortes' claustrophobic thriller Buried casts Ryan Reynolds in his most powerful and affecting role as a US worker stationed in Iraq who finds himself kidnapped and buried alive.

Cortes makes this a brutal reality; we don't see the kidnapping, or what happened to Paul before he was taken. Like Paul, we're thrown head-first into everyone's worst nightmare.

Throughout the film - armed with only a lighter, a slowly dying phone and a handful of other tools - Paul tries to increase his chances of survival, and he manages to get in touch with State Department agent Dan Brenner (Robert Paterson), who mounts a daring rescue mission.

As he waits to be saved, Paul is tortured and threatened, and all seems lost until the film's final moments, when Dan calls him saying they've found him and are preparing to dig him up. Relieved, Paul gets a tearful call from his wife (Samantha Mathis), promising her he'll be okay, only for Dan to call again and reveal he's arrived at the wrong burial site.

The film then ends with Paul suffocating to death, buried by sand as it overtakes his coffin.
