As the name suggests, Ari Aster's feature-length debut Hereditary, is an allegory for mental illness, which can be passed from family members genetically. However in this film it is not just the mental illness that is passed from generations but the worship of a male demon named, Paimon.
Annie's family is put through utter hell after the passing of her mother and then horrific accidental death of her young daughter. When seeking a way to find closure, Annie begins to attempt to contacting the dead.
The final act of the film is such a roller coaster of disturbing imagery and events that its hard to even write about. The father of the family is burned up brutally, the possessed mother levitates and beheads herself with piano wire, and the son Peter, throws himself out of a window to escape.
When he awakens he is a different being, he follows his mothers levitating corpse into the treehouse where he is met by naked cult members and crowned. The revelation is that the family have been attempting to rebirth their leader Paimon in a new male body and the ritual is finally a success. Creepy.
