Scanners is often overlooked as 'that film with the iconic head exploding scene', but there's a lot to love in this Cronenberg sci-fi thriller. The film focuses on 'Scanners' - people with powerful telekinetic and telepathic powers and these powers aren't often used for good.

The look on the poor man's face before feeling his entire cranium combust says it all, dying by Scanner is one unpleasant way to go.

While the famous scene with a poor man's head going boom is highly gruesome, it's actually the film's climax that shows the true scope of how horrific being killed by a scanner can be.

As our hero and villain dish out a battle of minds with telekinetic attacks, we see their veins bulge across their entire bodies and blood begins to seep out through their skin. Their flesh bubbles and falls away before the loser's body bursts into flame.

Just to add insult to injury, his eyes then explode.

It's hard to watch as the spectacularly disgusting special effects heighten every painful moment of just what this poor guy is going through, and knowing it's all being done with a mere thought is alarming.
