3. Michel Delassalle - Les Diaboliques (1955)
Henri-George Clouzot's intense psycho-drama cum murder mystery film actually pre dates a lot of the movies mentioned here - including Hitchcock's 'Psycho' on which this must have been an influence of sorts. The movie is an atmospheric and troubling one - a wife and mistress decide to be rid of their controlling mutual partner. Once the deed is done they are troubled by a seemingly restless corpse, visions of the victim cropping up in the most unexpected places and the constant threat of the discovery of their crime. That this still reflects only a tiny portion of the blood-curdling narrative of 'Les Diaboliques' is a testament to how troubling a film it truly is. This particular moment, a man with eyes rolled back in his head, hair wet and matted could signify anything - but largely it signifies sickening terror.
