10 Most Emotionally Devastating Movie Moments Of 2016

Watching Doctor Strange has been compared to an acid trip and while it’s definitely the most psychedelic Marvel movie to date, it isn’t without it’s more moving moments too. Especially in a powerful scene where the titular superhero’s mentor, the Ancient One, departs this mortal coil.

Although initially sceptical of each other, by the time this scene rolls around Stephen Strange and the Ancient One have developed a mentor-mentee relationship based on mutual respect despite their differences.

But of course, this is the movies so something has to come along and mess that up and it does in the form of the Ancient One’s former pupil Kaecilius who offs his erstwhile guru during a fight scene by kicking her through a portal into the real world where she falls hundreds of feet before brutally crashing down on the streets of New York City.

Doctor Strange does his best to save his mentor but to no avail and the Ancient One sadly dies but not before appearing to him one last time in astral form to tell deliver a heart-wrenching monologue in which she tells her protégé, ‘Death is what gives life meaning. To know your days are numbered and your time is short. You'd think after all this time I'd be ready. But look at me. Stretching one moment out into a thousand ... just so that I can watch the snow’. Sob.
