10 Most Exciting Upcoming Movies Announced This Year

2. Ford Vs. Ferrari

Star Wars Return Of The Jedi Boba Fett
Lionsgate

Before he directs Boba Fett, James Mangold will first helm a true-story movie about a team of American engineers - led by automotive pioneer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles - who are tasked by Henry Ford II with building a new racecar capable of beating the dominant Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship.

We've already sung the praises of Mangold's Logan, but this guy has also brought us Girl, Interrupted, Walk The Line, Identity, The Wolverine and the criminally-underrated 3:10 To Yuma; he's a superb director with a diverse skillset and strong dramatic chops.

Christian Bale and Matt Damon are attached to star as Miles and Shelby, respectively, with Jon Bernthal also in talks. It's being written by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, who've worked on films like Edge Of Tomorrow, Black Mass and Get On Up. Chernin Entertainment are on production duties, the studio responsible for Hidden Figures, the modern Apes trilogy, and Spy.

We could go on, but Ford Vs. Ferrari is clearly a hotbed of talent, and with Mangold's guiding hand, this is almost certainly going to be in the discussion come awards season.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
