10 Most Forgettable Superhero Movies Since 2000
7. Fantastic Four (2005)
When it comes to squeaky clean superheroes that lack complexity, moral ambiguity or come to think of it any depth whatsoever, the Fantastic Four are top of the list, so it’s probably missing the point to call this big screen outing shallow and superficial. Strictly two dimensional, the film doesn’t attempt to court anyone over the age of 12.
Even a glorified feature length cartoon needs structure, though, but the film is less interested in story than in riffing off the charm of its leads. It’s less a movie than a collection of light-hearted skits based around being transformed into a superhero with completely useless powers (elasticity, anyone?), then after a while our heroes fight Dr Doom. They win. The end.
Uninteresting heroes are usually balanced by a thrilling villain, but here Dr Doom spends most of the film puttering around an empty room watching himself transform. When he finally hatches a diabolical scheme, he’s defeated by Jessica Alba. “Thrilling” is not the word that comes to mind.
