Now is a good time to be envious of film fans across the pond, for The Birth of a Nation already received its general release in the US in October. Ever since it premiered at Sundance at the beginning of 2016 the film has been the subject of much controversy, much of it unwelcome due to director, writer and star, Nate Parker's personal legal issues.

However, we're interested in the positive hype that it has received with its rave reviews, with many praising the story, direction, themes, and performances. The trailer is enough to stir emotions and excitement, and the dull palette of colours ensures that every single frame will be arresting.

Many might be growing wary of the sheer amount of films regarding the history of American slavery, whether it be the special 12 Years a Slave or the underwhelming Matthew McConaughey vehicle Free State of Jones, but like it or not, it is a subject that is ripe with a wide range of narrative possibilities.

Thankfully here in the UK we only have a short wait until January to see The Birth of a Nation, a film in which the title alone intelligently plays on D. W. Griffith's 1915 The Birth of a Nation, which was essentially a lengthy celebration of the Ku Klux Klan. Its January release slot suggests that Parker has high hopes for recognition in the upcoming awards season, and we here in the UK have high hopes for an important and entertaining film.
