When was the last time M. Night Shyamalan made a brilliant film? The Visit was impressive, but it wasn't quite special enough to wash away the damage of a string of career blunders, such as the abysmal After Earth, the god-awful live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender, or the hilariously terrible The Happening. But that might all be about to change.

The first suggestion that Split might be a return to form for Shyamalan was the casting of James McAvoy, an actor that is notorious for being very picky when it comes to his roles. It would be fair to assume that if the script for Split was underwhelming or if Shyamalan's vision for the film wasn't promising McAvoy would have steered clear.

However, if that isn't enough to convince you that the master of the twist is back to his best, the recent release of the trailer appeared to make everyone's excitement fly through the roof. McAvoy is positively creepy as he portrays a man with split-personality syndrome (24 different personalities, no less!) kidnap a car-full of young women. It's darkly funny and truly horrifying. If you haven't watched it yet, make sure you do so right away.

Thankfully Split is set to be released in January in both the UK and the US. If you still feel cheated by Shyamalan's recent directorial efforts, Split looks to be the film that you should definitely give him one more chance on.
