Rey's lineage was something fans speculated over endlessly for years. Before being told she was a nobody, and then in turn that she is a Palpatine descendant, one of the widely discussed ideas was that Rey was in fact a clone of Anakin Skywalker. The Star Wars universe is no stranger to cloning, and the Expanded Universe has even dealt with the cloning of a force user in the past, perhaps why this theory was given so much credibility.

In an attempt to explain Rey's immense power, fans drew the connection between her and The Chosen One. Evidence such as the Skywalker lightsaber calling to her, as well as the ambiguous 'mirror' scene in The Last Jedi seem to back this idea up.

In the end though, the theory turned out to be nothing but hopeful fans looking for an Anakin connection.
