10 Most Intense Western Duels Ever

4. True Grit (1969)

Tombstone Doc Holliday Final Duel

True Grit was one of John Wayne's greatest western films, which is saying something given his filmography consisting of little outside the genre. The movie was so significant, it was remade nearly 50 years after its release.

While there are a number of good gunfights in the film, the very best has to be the final fight between Wayne's Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and the Pepper gang, whom he intended on taking in... or killing - whichever they preferred. Their reply of "bold talk for a one-eyed fat man" only spurned him to action.

When he confronted them on horseback, it was just him against four, which seemed like bad odds until the fight began to play out. He makes his way towards them while firing off his rifle and pistol until each man falls to the last.

In the end, Wayne nearly gets taken out, but is saved at the last moment by La Boeuf who was standing on the hill above.
