The Final girls is an underrated gem. The flick is a modern day Scream, with its genre-blending script and meta commentary on the horror genre as a whole. If you haven't seen it yet, it is a must watch.

The film follows Max, a young girl who's grieving her late, actress mother. Max and her friends are attending a special showing of the famous horror movie Max's mum starred in, when a fire starts in the theatre.

To get her friends to safety, Max cuts through the cinema screen and they all end up INSIDE the movie! From there, the flick deconstructs the slasher tropes, including the final chase scene.

After a failed attempt to kill the movie's villain, Billy, the final three characters are thrown to the ground after jumping from a window as the killer seems to explode into flames.

The action is played in slow motion which seems perfectly normal for a dramatic scene, until the character's reference their own slow movements. Suddenly it becomes clear this is no mere special effect.

The meta-moment fits perfectly with the movie's tone and the ensuing chase scene set to suspenseful music is both terrifying and hilarious. The chase ends when Max forces a "flashback" to happen, throwing the character's back in time and away from the killer. It's crazy creative and makes fun of movie chase sequences while paying homage to them.
