10 Most Messed Up Horror Movie Openings

2. Ghost Ship

Ghost Ship Captain
Warner Bros

For such a bang-on average film overall, Ghost Ship has one hell of an opening. Out of all the messed up ways we’ve seen people die so far on this list, this has to be the most ridiculous - and thus naturally one of the best.

Aboard a luxury cruiseliner, we see the dance floor filled with people swaying along to the smooth tones of a lounge singer. A young girl sits and watches from the side until the ship’s kindly captain takes her hand and offers to dance with her. It’s very sweet.

Well the wholesome vibes abruptly come to an end when we see a hand pull a lever, releasing some metal wiring which zips violently across the dancefloor. For a second we’re not sure what has happened until slowly we start to see people’s torsos slide off their lower halves.

Everyone on the dancefloor, save for the little girl, has been cut in half by the fast-moving wire. She has to stand and watch as the blood pools on the floor, knowing that she survived purely by virtue of being too short to be caught by the wire.
