The Film

David Lynch’s first feature film bears all the weird, surreal hallmarks of the Lynchian oeuvre we know, love and are completely baffled by today. Jack Nance stars in this Kafka influenced body horror as Henry Spencer, a wild-haired everyman living in a bleak industrial landscape who unexpectedly becomes father to a nightmarish, vaguely reptilian infant.

Oh, and there’s also giant sperms, tiny roasted ‘man-made’ chickens that spurt blood when carved and a strange lady who lives in a radiator and sings to Henry because this is David Lynch after all.

What The Hell It Means

Lynch has steadfastly refused to officially state what Eraserhead is all about, preferring instead that people come up with their own interpretation of the movie. But given the presence of huge spermatozoa and its monstrous, incessantly mewling baby it’s been widely speculated the film is about Lynch’s fear of fatherhood.

To be fair, Eraserhead is enough to put even the broodiest of people off parenthood for life.
