10 Most Mind-Bendingly Confusing Horror Movies
5. Begotten
The Film
Shot entirely in black and white, completely dialogue free and lacking anything resembling a traditional narrative, director E. Elias Merhige’s grainy, gory mindf*ck Begotten is about as experimental and arthouse as horror gets.
Beginning with a robed and masked man credited as ‘God Killing Himself’ who, well, kills himself by disembowelment, we then see a woman (‘Mother Earth’) emerge from his remains and impregnate herself with the dead god’s semen.
She then births a fully-grown dude (‘Son of Earth’) who’s burnt to death by a pack of faceless nomads and resurrected by his ma, before they are both dismembered and buried while flowers bloom on their burial site.
If you’re left wondering WTF after watching, you wouldn’t be the only one.
What The Hell It Means
Well, in case the religious symbolism escapes you Begotten is a truly f*cking weird reimagining of the story of Genesis and the creation of the universe, of course.
Although we can’t remember God committing seppuku or any necrophilia and dismemberment in any Old Testament stories taught to us at school. Funny that.
