A combination of comments from those involved with Terminator Genisys and rumblings from insiders to publications like The Hollywood Reporter and Variety have revealed that the plan is for this movie to be the first of a trilogy. Understandably, it ultimately all boils down to whether or not this one ends up being a hit at the box office. The plan is for this to be a standalone trilogy which might have taken place both before The Terminator and after Terminator: Salvation. As a result, it's really up to fans to decide whether or not they want to accept this as canon. The producers are clearly confident regardless, as Genisys apparently has a cliffhanger ending which leads to part two. Not much is known about what they have in store for those follow-ups, but rumours point to Arnold Schwarzenegger having a big - but very different - role in them both. The ending of the trilogy has also already been decided on according to some, while the "Genisys" subtitle will be dropped for the next two which may end up being shot back to back.
