10 Most Overrated '80s Horror Movies
4. Child's Play
Brad Dourif has appeared in classics like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Deadwood, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and yet is still best-known for voicing the killer doll from Child's Play, Chucky.
The premise of a children's toy being possessed by a serial killer sounds ridiculous, but the movie plays it straight, making it potentially scary. The sequels are more tongue-in-cheek but the first Child's Play takes itself very seriously.
Sadly, Child Play has a lot of wasted potential. When the child, Andy, tries to convince people that Chucky is evil, you don't know if he's telling the truth upon the film's first viewing. Sadly, the cat is let out of the bag way too early that Chuck is alive, removing all mystery from the story.
Dourif is delightful as Chucky but his over-the-top performance makes it impossible to see him as a credible threat. Also, when he... ahem... attacks his victims, it's obvious the actors are holding onto him to simulate they're fighting. Child's Play is definitely better than the sequels but that's not saying a lot.
