10 Most Remarkable Sci-Fi Movie Opening Scenes

5. Years Of War - X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Argued continually as what the entire movie should have been, it's not often that an opening sequence will outshine the whole film itself - but X-Men Origins: Wolverine put its best foot forward and then took fifty steps back in the way it played its introductory scenes.

Showing Wolverine's prowess as a practically immortal, regenerative, mutated killing machine, Origins shows us the years leading up to present day as its titular character fights in wars throughout time with his brother, swapping claws for bayonets and bombs. But then still claws at the end because there's always claws. Kind of hard to avoid when they're ingrained in your hands, to be fair.

Getting shot in the chest repeatedly and taking nothing but a bit of a knock back, the pair are decisively set on killing the enemy, to the point where Logan's brother Victor gets a bit TOO into shooting people in the maw with a big ass gun. We're forced to watch as Victor slowly becomes more monster than man, giving in to his primal urges until he attacks an innocent woman and then his own squadron - resulting in an ill-advised firing line becoming the fate for both brothers.

It's intense, and expertly paced, leaving us to wonder exactly why we were left with sewn mouth Deadpool by the end of the film. We deserved better.
