10 Most Rewatchable Movies Of The '90s

2. Boyz N The Hood (1991)

Pulp Fiction Mia Wallace Uma Thurman
Columbia Pictures

A young John Singleton delivered an explosive humanitarian classic with Boyz N the Hood, a warts-and-all look at life in a neighborhood where gunfire is everyday background noise and overhead police helicopters are omnipresent.

Anchored by powerful performances from Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne and Ice Cube, this passionate drama left audiences gut-punched back in 1991, and a quarter of a century later, it remains relevant.

In an age where movements like Black Lives Matter are necessary, Singleton's uncynical take on life in South Central LA is no less poignant after countless repeat viewings.

If only for its earnestness, sitting through Boyz N the Hood is rarely anything less than an emotional experience, particularly the scene where Ricky meets his untimely end.

Despite earning Singleton Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations at the Academy Awards that year, the movie missed out in both categories and a black director is yet to win an Oscar to this day.
