9. Barney Ross - The Expendables II
The Line: 'Rest in pieces.' With two Expendables films to choose from there was a lot of terrible dialogue to sift through. The franchise is essentially built on the premise that if you kill someone, you must quickly think of a zinger to shout at their corpse. Of course there are times when this works and times where you're left wondering if Stallone wrote all the one-liners first and built a story around them. When Sly gives himself lines, they need to be clear as he's not really known for his enunciation. Most of the run time of The Expendables is spent trying to figure out what people are saying with the remainder spent enjoying explosions. When he shouts out the above line though, you end up wishing you hadn't understood. There are a number of things wrong with it: 1. His victim, although clearly shot up, is still in one piece. 2. The glee Stallone gets from such a tired pun. 3. It's bloody awful. You can almost feel the shame emanating from the team around him, Statham especially as he had only just launched a far superior quip moments before (I now pronounce you man and knife). I get that these films are an homage to a simpler time of testosterone fueled action flicks, but if anything that means that every one-liner should be spot on sadly this is not the case.
