The character was able to bow out without tragedy and hand his shield to his successor, then enjoy a happy ending. It was perfect.

So popular is Old Man Steve that some people have been circulating the idea that he could replace Stan Lee as the MCU’s resident cameo star. It’s a sweet idea, but it’s also ridiculous.

Evans will have a full time movie career that he won’t be able to just drop for a guest spot two or three times a year, plus getting him in makeup and CGI is a lot of effort for a running gag that will be largely unappreciated by casual fans.

Then there’s the most important part: he’s not Stan Lee. The cameos themselves were never the magic part; Stan himself was.
