10 Most Ridiculous Halloween Horror Movies

6. Evil Dead II

The second entry in the Evil Dead franchise marked a major shift in tone. The first film is very much all in on the horror aspect. It manages to evoke feelings of dread and despair, through its claustrophobic and isolated setting. The practical effects are gruesome, and the situation feels hopeless.

Evil Dead II rehashes the plot of the original slightly, this time though it's just Ash and Linda occupying the cabin. It's given a healthy dose of slapstick and physical comedy that was nowhere to be seen in the original. Ash's hand becomes possessed and tries to kill him, he fashions a Captain Hook-esque chainsaw arm as a replacement, and he even ends up back in the Middle Ages. Probably not what cinema-goers were expecting in 1987.

It's such a strange transition from the first film to the second but surprisingly, it all works. Ash has since become a horror icon and the franchise became synonymous with slapstick humour. Bruce Campbell's comedy chops are impeccable, and even though the 2013 reboot veered away from this, fans of Evil Dead's particular brand of horror can get their fix through the Ash Vs. Evil Dead TV series.
