Sweet innocent Marvin, oh you poor, Kahuna Burger loving, boy. Seeing his friends gunned down by John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, hearing a terrifying speech, and witnessing a seeming act of God all in one morning. So, after surviving the massacre, the now friendly pair of gangsters take Marvin on a ride to deliver a suitcase to their boss. It's all about set up, contrasting from the previous scene where Marvin has seen all his friends killed by Jules and Vincent, as their character's tone shifts to a more relaxed pair discussing Jules' sudden revelation that he's going to quit the gangster business because he believes God has just saved his life. Travolta, disagreeing, becomes frustrated and so, to try and get his point across, turns gun in hand to Marvin to ask if he thinks God came down and bang. The car is sprayed crimson and immortal line oh man, I shot Marvin in the face, is uttered. Its shocking because its so unexpected, the sense of calm built in the first half of the scene means that the sudden gun shot and brain-filled car really blindsides the audience. However you can't help but laugh by how casual it all is, as Jackson and Travolta, post shot, squabble as if he's has just spilt a drink.
