'The Sultan of Sleaze' Joe D'Amato had a very varied career, which has seen him direct 100+ hardcore porno movies as well as some lame horror (Absurd and Anthropophagus), some excellent horror (Beyond The Darkness) and some spicy collaborations with the delectable actress Laura Gemser in the so called 'Black Emanuelle' films. Absurd and Anthropophagus are neither particularly tasteless or disgusting, bar one scene in which George Eastman eats a foetus. Beyond the Darkness is a warped masterpiece of morbid, sick and transgressive themes. The Black Emanuelle movies provide very entertaining tasteless sleaze with our heroine investigating all of the most lugubrious things and situations it is possible to encounter - snuff movies, the slave trade, bestiality etc. In Erotic Nights of the Living Dead D'Amato attempts to fuse hardcore sex 'thrills' with zombie 'horror'. It is suitable that there is an actor with terrible genital warts in this film - it just seems to be a fitting state of affairs in a Joe D'Amato sleaze fest. D'Amato was an excellent cinematographer and did sterling work on movies such as Michele Soavi's awesome slasher - Stage Fright: Aquarius in which he used his real name - Aristide Massaccesi.
