Unlike most horror remakes, Gore Verbinsi's The Ring proved itself to be an entirely different kind of beast.

The plot follows Rachel (Naomi Watts), a reporter who stumbles upon a cursed video tape while investigating her niece's death. With only seven days to live, she must find a way to stop the curse before it claims the life of her and her son (David Dorfman).

As Rachel's investigation deepens, Verbinski gradually heightens the tension as her time quickly runs out. Much like Nakata's Ringu, the horror hinges upon the slow-burn atmosphere that's instilled through the sombre cinematography accompanied by a haunting score from Hans Zimmer. All these elements combine to create a lingering sense of dread that tragedy is never far away.

Whenever Verbinski diverges from the original likewise serves to enhance the terror. Additional scenes like the horse on the ferry amplified the ominous atmosphere while extra details surrounding the tape only furthered mystery of the curse.

Throw in a bigger studio budget for improved effects and an even more disturbing tape sequence, and the climactic scene of watching Samara slowly emerge from the TV screen remains one of the most terrifying ordeals in horror history.
