In 1977, horror legend Dario Argento released Suspiria. An ultra-stylish, ultra-bloody giallo masterpiece which continues to be held as one of the greatest horrors ever made.

For a time, it was believed that this film could never be remade, let alone be remade well. But then Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino showed audiences that the impossible could be achieved with his retelling of a Berlin ballet school overrun with witches.

Rather than trying to replicate Argento's style, Guadagnino took an opposite approach. The vibrant technicolour of the original was replaced with a muted colour palette and Goblin's bombastic score was exchanged for the melancholic tones of Radiohead's Thom Yorke.

It was a drastically different viewing experience; but it was also an equally fascinating and disturbing one.

Despite the drastic shift in tone, the remake was nevertheless just as shocking and downright sickening as Aregento's classic. One bone-breaking dance sequence is undoubtedly ingrained in the nightmares of anyone who's seen it. Likewise, praise must be given to Tilda Swinton who portrayed three roles in the film.

If the remake faltered anywhere, though, it was weighing down the plot with constant references to the political turmoil of the time that just didn't go anywhere.
