10 Most Terrifying American Horror Movie Remakes

4. Funny Games (2007)

A shot-for-shot remake of his 1997 film of the same name, Michael Haneke's English-language version of Funny Games was just as sadistically twisted and playfully macabre as its predecessor. In fact, the only significant differences in this version were the change in location, the cast, and the house now had an updated decor.

The plot follows the Farber family's lake house getaway become upended when two strangers appear at their door asking for eggs. Events quickly take a sinister turn, however, and the wealthy family find themselves at the mercy of their tormenters.

Given that his film was intended as a commentary on violence in American cinema, Haneke gladly accepted the opportunity to helm the remake. It was his chance to terrify American audiences with this menacing home invasion chiller, and he didn't disappoint.

Though some critics found the delivery of this commentary be condescending in nature, the new cast ensured that every ounce of terror was conveyed. Naomi Watts especially shines alongside co-star Tim Roth whereas Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet's performances as the villains are equal parts creepy and fascinating.

With Funny Games, Haneke showed that sometimes the only way to remake your film is to do it yourself.
