10 Most Terrifying Horror Movie Cults
5. The Goddess Cult - Apostle
Successful Welsh director Gareth Evans took a long time to make a feature in his home country and, when he did, it didn't exactly paint it as the most welcoming and salubrious of surroundings.
Evans made his name by bringing the attention of the world to the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat thanks to high octane action movies like The Raid. But for the horror anthology flick V/H/S 2 he stepped a little beyond this comfort zone with a story of a demon-worshipping Indonesian cult committing ritual sacrifice at the "Time Of Reckoning."
It seems that his contribution to V/H/S was the perfect recruiting tool to bring Evans into the fold of sinister cults as he would later make a whole cult feature with Apostle, a movie that could perhaps best be described as "The Wicker Man, but Welsh."
And who better to step into the Christopher Lee role as the dynamic cult leader, only more Welsh, but Port Talbot's finest: Michael Sheen. Here Sheen leads a cult of turn of the century ex-convicts on a once barren Welsh island where blood sacrifices to a local goddess have apparently rendered the land fertile.
And you know a horror movie cult has really crossed the line when it turns out that even their own goddess wants to get away from them!
